A GOOD PLACE TO BEGIN.
Your first little
look around.
A few minutes to set up. Plenty of room to explore.
1. Make yourselves at home.
Install Orvio from the Microsoft Store. On first run, create a parent password, choose Little Explorer or Explorer, and add children from the Parent Dashboard. Keep the password somewhere secure: there is no online Orvio password-recovery service.
Type a question into the home search box or address bar for Kiddle web results. Internet access is required. “Find directory sites” is a separate local directory search.
2. Take a break. Make something.
Games: choose the permanent Games shortcut. Memory Match, Three in a Row, Number Puzzle, Connect Four, Maze Explorer, Garden Snake, Word Detective and Shape Safari are built in. Snake has Start/Pause controls. Close a game whenever you like.
Calculator: choose Calculator, then use the big buttons or type an expression. Enter calculates and Backspace removes the last character.
Color & Draw: pick a picture, a color and a region to fill. Switch to Draw for your own strokes. The eraser removes drawing without wiping the coloring underneath. Undo reverses recent changes. Save picture opens the Windows save dialog to save a PNG.
3. Listen to the next discovery.
Open a readable article and choose the large Read Aloud button beside the address bar. Start, pause or stop; change speed, voice, text size and spacing. You can Tab to a paragraph and press Enter to hear it.
Reading uses installed local Windows voices. Windows needs a local voice installed. Image-only pages, scanned articles and some interactive pages may not provide readable text. Reading aloud does not classify a page for safety.
4. Find the grown-ups’ corner.
Enter the parent password to open the Parent Dashboard. Manage up to eight child profiles, daily time limits, bedtime, approved and blocked sites, page-section approvals, record retention, exports and recoverable profile removal.
Little Explorer restricts browsing to directory entries and parent approvals. Explorer permits a wider web while retaining filtering. A parent approval for one page section does not automatically approve sibling sections.
Ordinary search recording starts off. The dashboard also offers local keyword checks and choices for keeping records for 7, 30 or 90 days. Learn what stays on the computer and what outside services receive.
5. Know what the filters can—and cannot—do.
Orvio combines address lists, parent approvals and blocks, strict parameters for supported search engines, family DNS and optional local word rules. These reduce some exposure; they do not establish that a website is suitable.
The current optional topic vocabulary includes LGBTQ-related terms. Parents can switch it off. These are word matches, not judgments about people or an understanding of meaning. Names, quotations, health information and educational text can be blocked too.
With page-text checking enabled, initial pages stay covered while an isolated local scanner checks readable text. It watches later changes, titles, accessible same-origin frames and open shadow content. It does not upload or retain the scan buffer. Very large or deeply nested pages may be refused.
Images, video, scanned documents, cross-origin frame text and closed shadow content are not inspected. Obfuscated, translated, dynamic or adversarial text can appear briefly or evade checking. Approved sites can change or contain unsuitable material.
Orvio does not restrict other browsers or apps. Programs running as the same Windows user can read, alter or remove local data. Use adult supervision and appropriate Windows account controls. Automated checks do not replace real family use, accessibility review or independent safety certification.
A note about downloads.
The Microsoft Store is the main download route. Separate GitHub testing releases may be unsigned and have no authenticated automatic update channel. Prefer the Store version for normal installation. View the GitHub release details if you need testing builds.
